We have been showing cats since 1988 and have been breeding British Shorthairs since 1992. Our prefix is 'Gargantua' which is registered with the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF)and was chosen to reflect the huge size of our cats.
Our first British Shorthair was Grand Champion & Premier Janamel Mungojerry (40/4) a lilac colourpoint who we bought initially as a pet from Jane & Mel Brooks (Janamel). We started to show him and soon got hooked on the breed and there it all began! Mungo's show career to date is as follows: 4 GCC's, 7 RGCC's, 26 CC's, 36 BOB's, 3 BIS's, 1 RGPC, 8 PC's and he was Best of Breed Colourpointed British Shorthair at the 1996 Supreme Cat Show.
Our first breeding queen was Kavida Coco Chanel - Chloe, (15b), a chocolate self who we had from Liz Berry (Childerhouse) who went on to produce Gr Ch Gargantu Mr Mistoffelees. Chloe is now retired and lives in luxury in the Forest of Dean.
Then we purchased the now Gr Ch Shahbanue Pink Cascade (21c), a lilac tortie from Lesley Cooling (Shahbanue). She has had a marvelous show career, becoming the first lilac tortie to achieve the titles of Champion and Grand Champion in the UK - Sadie's show career to date is 3 GCC's, 1 RGCC, 10 Merits, 11 CC's, 11 BOB's what an achievement!
We also now own Gr CH Dawnica Michael Angelo (40/7) who we had from Lesley Cooling (Shahbanue) when she emigrated to start a new life in Spain. 'Angelo' was bred by Monica Wilton in Jersey and was sired by Gr Ch Gargantua Bustopher Jones. We were thrilled when he was Best British exibit at the Millenium National Show at Olympia. His show career to date is 3 GCC's, 2 RGCC's, 6 CC's & 6 BOB's. He went to Champion in his first 3 shows as an adult and to Grand Champion in his next 3 shows not bad for a Colourpointed British Shorthair.
We now have Champion Gargantua Caspar (40/4). Caspar became a Champion in his first 3 shows as an adult after 6 straight wins as a kitten. He also won Best Colourpointed Kitten and Best Colourpointed Adult at the Colourpointed British Shorthair Cat Club Annual Awards for 2002.
We now have a new boy, he is called Gargantua Dreamcatcher (40/4). He was 'Best in Show' British Shorthair Kitten at the Wyvern Cat Club Show 2003, South West Counties Cat Club Show 2003, Kensington, Kitten and Neuter Cat Club Show 2003. He then went to the Supreme Cat Show 2003, where he won 'Best of Breed' BSH Kitten 2003 and then went on to win 'Best of Variety' BSH Kitten 2003. Quite an achievement for our little lad.
This was, without doubt, our best day ever, in showing and breeding in the cat fancy.
We have, from a very early stage, taken a great interest in Blood Grouping amongst British Shorthair cats.We realise the importance of knowing the blood group of your breeding cats and have had all ours tested. We have various papers on blood grouping and would be happy to share the information with anyone who wants more details. We are always happy to offer advice, discuss problems or just cat chat.
We received the accolade of 'Breeder of the Year' 2002 and 2003 from the Colourpointed British Shorthair Cat Club.
